Premature ejaculation is perhaps the most common male sexual dysfunction. It is almost the norm for young men during their first sexual experiences. But for some, the problem continues, while for others it returns later in life. Doctors aren’t entirely sure how to explain the phenomenon. Just as one learns to control one’s urination, i.e. to hold it or release it, one can also learn to control one’s ejaculation. However, when a man has not learned to exercise control over his ejaculation, then he may face a problem. However, research into the causes of rapid ejaculation is inconclusive.
An exact definition for the duration of premature ejaculation is almost impossible. According to the Conference of the European Society for Sexual Medicine (2006), a large American study showed that:
- The average duration of men with premature ejaculation was 1.8 minutes.
- The men’s average duration without a problem was 7.3 minutes.
Nevertheless, there were people who, while they could last up to 25 minutes, claimed to have premature ejaculation.
This clearly shows that people have different perceptions of what is normal.
At the same conference, Professor Waldinger reported that 2.5% of men could not last more than 90 seconds. These men definitely had premature ejaculation. However, clinical experience shows that most couples who last less than 5 minutes, at least in half of their contacts, feel dissatisfied.
In the event that one feels unhappy that the ejaculation is coming too quickly, then one could seek help for premature ejaculation.
