How does erectile dysfunction affect the partner’s sexual function? Although we know that a man’s sexual dysfunction often causes sexual problems in his partner, few studies have investigated this issue.
Recently published data from a study (Jian, 2013) involving 632 heterosexual couples shed light on this matter. The researchers collected data on the presence of sexual dysfunctions in women and erectile problems in men. The results revealed that 43% of the women experienced some form of sexual dysfunction, while 15% of the men had moderate or mild erectile dysfunction. The findings supported a significant association between erectile dysfunction in men and sexual dysfunction in women. Additionally, it was found that erectile dysfunction increased the likelihood of women reporting problems with arousal, orgasm, pain during intercourse, and decreased sexual satisfaction.
Why does erectile dysfunction affect a woman’s sexual function?
Erectile dysfunction results in unpleasant sexual experiences for both men and women. These experiences cause couples to anticipate dysfunction during intercourse, directing attention towards erectile function and away from sexual stimuli and thoughts, thereby creating problems for women as well.
However, treating erectile dysfunction typically has a positive impact on women’s sexual function as well. Nonetheless, it is essential to recognize that erectile dysfunction affects the couple, and thus, treatment yields better results when addressing both the woman’s sexual problems and the quality of the couple’s relationship.
